What actually has to change when an organisation adopts the Capability Method.
Adopting the Capability Method doesn’t mean changing what your teams work with day to day. It means changing how they work with it. Closing the gap between who’s responsible for a capability and what they actually have to work with means three things change at once.
A. Fully Adopting the Capability Perspective
Seeing the organisation through its capabilities, not just its org chart or its systems — to clarify scope, ensure a genuinely 360° view of what a capability actually depends on, and support adoption across the organisation rather than inside one team’s silo.
B. Clarifying Ownership
Every capability needs a named owner, not a shared assumption that someone is looking after it. Clear accountability, and a deliberate focus on the capabilities that matter most — not an attempt to own everything equally.
C. Adjusting the Operating Model
Better collaboration and transparency, within the unit running a capability and across the other units that depend on it. The operating model changes to match how the capability is actually run, not the other way around.
The Point
Minimal changes in what you work with. Major changes in how you work with it. Most of the tools, systems and people are already there — what changes is the discipline around them.
