The Intent
Why lead with capabilities at all, rather than a transformation programme.
Capabilities aren’t the point. They’re the vehicle. The Capability Method treats capabilities as a vehicle for driving strategic change, with a long-term perspective — not a one-off project that ends when a steering committee stops meeting.
Why
Transformation is necessary for securing long-term sustainability — and it will not happen in an organisation that will not support it. A method that isn’t built to be adopted, sustained and re-checked doesn’t actually transform anything; it produces a report and a slide with everyone’s names on it.
Prioritise. Organise. Transform — Without Losing Today’s Performance.
Three things have to hold at once, not in sequence:
- Prioritise — not every capability changes at the same time; the ones that matter most go first
- Organise — the operating model has to actually support the change, not just tolerate it
- Transform without losing today’s performance — the organisation still has to deliver while it changes how it delivers
What This Means in Practice
This is why the method runs one domain at a time (see What You Actually Receive), rather than attempting to transform everything simultaneously — and why SEE IT, STEER IT and KEEP IT are built to run continuously, not as a project with an end date.
