The three components of a business capability, and the exact questions each one has to answer.

How the Concepts Fit Together introduces Platforms & Tools, Business Processes, and People & Competencies as the three places a capability lives. This page goes one level deeper: the actual questions each component is checked against.

A capability is where all three components overlapPlatforms& ToolsBusinessProcessesPeople &CompetenciesCapability
Each component asks its own questions — the capability is only as strong as the weakest one.

Platforms & Tools

  • What technical solutions are relevant to address this business need?
  • What should be common across the organisation, rather than reinvented team by team?
  • What technical market trends are relevant — what’s changing that this capability needs to account for?

Business Processes

  • What processes are needed to adopt and maintain this capability?
  • What best-practice processes should be standardised and governed centrally, versus left to local judgement?
  • How can current processes be improved, rather than just documented as-is?

People & Competencies (Skills)

  • What skills are needed to fully benefit from this capability?
  • How can the skill be trained and adopted, not just described in a job description?
  • What actually qualifies as successful adoption — what does “the team can do this now” mean in practice?

Who Owns the Standard

A business capability is a digital or operational capability where the method is accountable for defining the standard — even once the capability is adopted and operated day to day by the organisation’s own teams. For every business capability, the method stays the point of contact for best practice and continuous improvement; ownership of the day-to-day moves to the organisation, ownership of the standard doesn’t.
